๐Ÿง  Working Theory: Mac Tech-Support Scam + Affiliate Fraud

1๏ธโƒฃ

The hacker broke into our Google Ads account and used our payment card to run their campaign โ€” so their own costs are zero.

2๏ธโƒฃ

Vulnerable Mac users searching for help with storage, USB drives, or hidden files clicked the ads and landed on convincing-looking Apple-branded pages.

3๏ธโƒฃ

The landing pages showed a phone number (likely a 1-800 number to a fake "Apple support center"). Callers were told their Mac was infected and charged $200โ€“$500 for fake repairs. Some were given remote access to their machine.

4๏ธโƒฃ

The hacker profits, the victim loses twice โ€” once as the business whose account was hijacked to pay for the ads, and once as the Mac user who was scammed on the landing page.

โš–๏ธ

This is a federal crime โ€” impersonating Apple constitutes wire fraud under 18 U.S.C. ยง 1343. The FTC and FBI actively investigate this pattern. If you have information about who operates these pages, please submit a tip below.

  • โฑ334 changes in 61 minutes โ€” This was not a human manually clicking. An automated script (likely Google Ads API or a third-party tool) executed the attack. Whoever did this has technical skill.
  • ๐Ÿ”„URL swap at minute 47 โ€” The attacker replaced all initial "apple-support-page-XXXXX" URLs with "mac*" alternatives exactly 47 minutes into the attack. This is a deliberate evasion technique used when initial domains get flagged.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐBudget set to $4,582/day โ€” Our legitimate budget was $1/day. The hacker wasn't trying to be subtle โ€” they wanted maximum spend as fast as possible before the account was shut down.
  • ๐Ÿ—Professional campaign structure โ€” 3 tightly-themed ad groups, each with a dedicated domain, each targeting a specific Mac problem. This is not a first-time operation. This person has done this before.
  • ๐Ÿ“All domains on Squarespace โ€” Squarespace was chosen because setup is instant, no server configuration needed, and content can be deleted quickly. The "apple-support-page-XXXXX" naming suggests a template with auto-generated numbers.
  • ๐ŸŽฏOnly Mac users targeted โ€” Every single keyword targets macOS/MacBook users. This is a dedicated Mac-focused operation, not a generic phishing kit.
  • ๐Ÿ”Account was compromised via credential theft โ€” Google's own records show the access came from outside our normal login pattern. The hacker likely obtained our Google Ads credentials through phishing, a data breach, or credential-stuffing.

The more people see this data, the more likely someone recognizes the pattern, the domains, or the operation. Share this page:
