Public Locksmith comes to you anywhere in Uptown Charlotte (28202, 28244, 28280, 28282) for car lockouts in parking decks, condo and apartment lockouts, replacement car keys, rekeying, and office lock work. We are fully mobile, licensed in North Carolina (License #2721), bonded and insured, and we answer lockout calls 24/7. Arrival is typically 20–35 minutes in most of our service area, but Uptown traffic changes fast, so call 704-905-6600 for a current arrival time.
Uptown is not like the suburbs. Most people here park in a deck, live or work behind a front desk, and deal with building rules before anyone touches a lock. Here is how that shapes the work we do downtown.
Locked Out in a Parking Deck
Because nearly everyone in Uptown parks in a deck or garage, a lot of our calls here are car lockouts on level 4 of a structure with spotty cell signal. A few things make these go faster:
- Give us the exact spot. Deck name or entrance, level, and the space or column number. Decks look alike inside.
- Watch your parking ticket or time limit. If your paid time is running out, tell the attendant or note the time so you are not charged extra while you wait.
- Move to signal if you need to. Step to the ramp or street level to call, then go back to the car before we arrive.
- Check the trunk release and every door first. It sounds obvious, but a rear door or hatch is sometimes unlocked.
We open cars and trunks without damaging the door or window. Learn more on our car lockout service page.
If the real problem is that the key is gone, not locked inside, we can usually make a new one right in the deck. We cut keys by VIN code or by decoding the lock, then program transponder keys and push-to-start fobs through the OBD port. Bring your registration or title plus ID; we need proof of ownership before making any car key. Details are on our car key replacement page.
High-Rise Condos and Apartments: Work With the Building
Uptown’s towers have front desks, key-card entry and management rules. Before you call a locksmith for your unit door, check these:
- Ask the front desk or management first. Many buildings keep a spare key or can let residents in during office hours. If they can’t, they can at least clear us to come up.
- Tell the desk we are coming. Our technician may need to be signed in or escorted, and some buildings limit which elevator or entrance contractors use.
- Have your ID ready. Building staff may want to confirm you live in the unit.
- Know what we can and can’t touch. We can open, repair or rekey the lock on your unit door. Lobby, garage and elevator key-cards belong to the building’s system, so replacement fobs come from management.
If you rent, read your lease before changing or rekeying locks. Many leases require permission or a copy of the new key for management. Condo owners usually have more freedom with their own door but should still check HOA rules.
For owners and landlords turning over units, rekeying between tenants is one of the most common jobs in dense rental areas. Our page on rekeying after a tenant moves out covers when it makes sense and what it involves.
Offices and Storefronts in the Business District
Uptown is Charlotte’s central business district, so a big share of our downtown work is commercial:
- Office lockouts before an early meeting or after hours. See our office lockout page.
- Rekeying after an employee leaves with a key.
- Master key systems, so managers can open every door while staff only open their own.
- Panic bars, door closers and storefront locks for ground-floor retail and restaurants.
- Access control for suites that want to manage entry by card or code. Our access control page explains options.
In a multi-tenant tower, coordinate with building management on anything that touches shared doors, fire exits or the main card system. Your suite entry is usually yours to manage; the corridor and stairwell doors usually are not.
Fourth Ward’s Older Homes
Fourth Ward’s historic Victorian homes are a different job from a glass tower. Older doors and hardware can be worn, out of square, or fitted with locks that are no longer common. In these homes we often repair an existing lock rather than replace it, or install new hardware carefully so the door still closes and latches properly. If you just bought one, rekeying is a smart first step since you can’t know who still has keys.
Game Days and Event Nights
With Bank of America Stadium and Spectrum Center both in Uptown, event traffic and full decks can slow everyone down, including us. If you are locked out around a game or concert:
- Tell us where you are and which exits are closed or jammed.
- Expect a longer arrival than usual; we will give you an honest estimate on the phone.
- If you are somewhere unsafe or have a child or pet in the car, call 911 first.
What a Visit Looks Like
- You call 704-905-6600 and tell us the problem, your exact location, and your vehicle or lock type. We speak English and Spanish.
- We give you an arrival estimate and explain what affects the cost, such as vehicle type, key type and time of day. Our locksmith pricing page goes through those factors.
- The technician arrives, checks ID or ownership documents, and does the work on the spot.
- You pay by cash or credit card.
One tip that saves Uptown residents time and money: if you are down to one car key, get a spare made now. A spare from a working key is usually faster and cheaper than an all-keys-lost job in a parking deck at night.
