If your push-to-start fob is lost, broken or no longer recognized, we can usually make and program a new smart key right where your car is parked. You don’t need to tow it to a dealer. Our technician comes to you anywhere in the Charlotte area, checks ownership, cuts the emergency blade, and programs the new fob to your car’s immobilizer with professional diagnostic tools.
This page covers how to tell what’s wrong, what we do on site, what changes the time and cost, and when a different service is the better fit.
What the problem usually looks like
Smart keys, also called proximity keys, let you unlock the doors and start the car without taking the fob out of your pocket. When something goes wrong, you’ll usually see one of these:
- “Key not detected” or “Key not found” on the dash. The car can’t sense the fob, so it won’t start.
- The doors won’t unlock when you touch the handle, but the fob looks fine.
- The fob is lost, and you either have one spare left or no keys at all.
- The case is cracked or the buttons are worn out, so the remote works only some of the time.
- The fob went through the wash or was dropped in water and stopped working.
Check these first
Some of these problems don’t need a new key at all. Before you call anyone, try:
- Replace the fob battery. A weak battery is the most common reason for a “key not detected” message. The battery type is usually printed on the old battery inside the fob.
- Hold the fob against the start button. Many push-to-start cars can read a fob with a dead battery if you touch it to the button (or put it in a marked spot in the console) while pressing the brake. Your owner’s manual shows the exact spot.
- Use the emergency blade. Most smart keys have a small metal key hidden inside. Press the release on the fob, slide it out, and use it in the driver’s door. Some cars hide the keyhole under a small cap on the handle.
- Try your spare fob. If the spare works, the problem is the first fob, not the car.
If the spare fob also fails and the car shows warning lights, the problem may be in the car’s system rather than the key. Tell us that when you call.
What we do on site, step by step
- Confirm ownership. We check your registration or title against your ID before making any key.
- Identify the right fob. Smart keys are specific to the make, model, year and often the trim. We match the frequency and chip to your vehicle.
- Cut the emergency blade. We cut the hidden blade by code from the VIN where possible, or decode it from the door lock. Many modern blades are laser-cut (high-security) keys, and we cut those on site too.
- Program the fob. We connect to the OBD port and program the new smart key to the immobilizer. Some vehicles need the PIN code read first, and a few need a module programmed on the bench.
- Remove lost keys when needed. If a fob was lost or stolen, we can often erase it from the car so it can no longer start the vehicle.
- Test everything. We check keyless entry, push-button start, the remote buttons, the trunk release and the emergency blade before we leave.
Adding a spare vs. all keys lost
There are two very different jobs here, and which one you have affects time and cost more than anything else.
| Adding a spare | All keys lost | |
|---|---|---|
| You have | At least one working fob | No working fob |
| Blade cutting | Can be copied or cut by code | Cut by code or decoded from the lock |
| Programming | Usually simpler and shorter | Often needs PIN reading or module work |
| Typical result | Faster and cheaper | Takes longer, more steps |
If you’re down to one smart key, get a spare made now. Making a spare while you still have a working key is usually faster and cheaper than an all-keys-lost job later. For regular keys, transponder keys and remote-head keys, see our car key replacement page.
What affects time and cost
We don’t quote one flat number because smart key jobs vary a lot. The main factors are:
- Make, model and year. Some brands program in minutes. Others need security codes, extra steps or bench work.
- Spare or all keys lost. As shown above, all-keys-lost jobs take more work.
- The fob itself. Some vehicles take a wider range of compatible fobs than others.
- Blade type. Laser-cut blades take more time than standard cuts.
- Time of day. After-hours and emergency calls cost more than scheduled daytime work.
- Location. Where the car is parked within our area plays a part.

What to have ready
The job goes faster when you have these on hand:
- Vehicle registration or title, plus a photo ID with a matching name
- The VIN (on the registration, the dash near the windshield, or the driver’s door jamb)
- Make, model, year and trim
- Any working fob you still have, even a damaged one
- The exact location of the car, including deck level or space number if it’s in a parking garage
- A note of any dash warnings you’ve seen
When this is not the right service
- Your fob is inside the locked car. You need a lockout, not a new key. See our car lockout service.
- The fob works, but the car won’t start or the start button feels stuck. The issue may be the ignition or push-button switch. See ignition repair and replacement.
- Your car uses a regular turn key, a transponder key or a flip key. Our general car key replacement page covers those.
- The battery was the problem. A new coin battery may be all you need.
- The car has electrical faults beyond the key. A mechanic or dealer may need to diagnose the vehicle first.
