If you’re locked out of your house or apartment in Charlotte, call us at 704-905-6600. A licensed technician will come to your door, usually in 20–35 minutes across most of our service area. We check that you live there, then open the door. We try non-destructive methods first, so in most cases your lock still works afterward. If your keys were lost or stolen, we can rekey the lock on the same visit so the old keys no longer work.
We are fully mobile and run 24/7 for lockouts. We cover Ballantyne, South Charlotte, Pineville, Matthews, Weddington and Waxhaw in North Carolina, plus Fort Mill, Indian Land, Tega Cay and Rock Hill in South Carolina.
What a house lockout usually looks like
Most residential lockouts come from a few common situations:
- The door locked behind you. A knob lock or a self-locking deadbolt caught when you stepped out to get the mail or walk the dog.
- Keys lost or stolen. Your keys are gone and you don’t know who might have them.
- Keys locked inside. You can see them on the counter, but every door and window is locked.
- A key that won’t turn. The lock is worn or jammed, or a key snapped off inside the cylinder.
- Apartment after hours. The leasing office is closed, maintenance isn’t answering, and you need to get in tonight.
- Keypad or smart lock trouble. Dead batteries, a forgotten code, or an app that won’t connect.
Before you call, walk the house once. Check the back door, garage entry, sliding doors and any window you can reach safely. If a neighbor or family member has a spare, that may be your fastest option. Please don’t force a window or kick a door. The repair almost always costs more than the lockout call.
What we do on site, step by step
- Phone intake. We ask for your address, the type of lock (knob, deadbolt, keypad, smart lock), and whether you still have your keys. This tells the technician what tools to bring and gives you an arrival estimate.
- Arrival and ID check. Before we touch the door, we confirm you live there. This step protects you. It’s what keeps a stranger from hiring a locksmith to get into your home.
- Look at the lock. The technician checks the brand, the cylinder and how the door fits in the frame. This decides which entry method is best.
- Non-destructive entry first. Most standard residential locks can be opened by picking or with bypass tools. These methods leave the lock working and the door undamaged.
- Drilling only as a last resort. Some high-security cylinders, damaged locks or jammed mechanisms can’t be opened any other way. If we need to drill, we tell you first and explain your options. That includes replacing the cylinder right then.
- Test and secure. Once you’re inside, we test the lock and deadbolt so the door closes and locks properly.
- Rekey or repair if needed. If your keys are missing, or the lock was failing before you got locked out, we can fix that during the same visit.
What to have ready
Getting through the ID check quickly is the biggest thing you can do to speed things up. Please have one or more of these:
- A photo ID showing the address. A driver’s license or state ID works best.
- If your ID shows an old address: a lease, a utility bill, mail addressed to you, or a document on your phone that ties you to the home.
- If your ID is inside: tell us when you call. We can often check it once the door is open, before we leave.
- For apartments: your unit number, gate code if there is one, and building or parking instructions.
- A way to pay. We take cash and credit card.
If you can’t show you live at the address, we may not be able to open the door. We know that’s frustrating, but it’s the same rule that protects your home when you’re not there.
Apartments, rentals and leasing offices
Renters have one extra thing to think about. Many leases say who may open or change the locks, and some require you to give the landlord a copy of any new key. Check your lease or call the leasing office before you have the lock rekeyed or replaced. Opening the door to let you in is usually simple. Changing the lock may need the property’s OK.
If the leasing office is open and can let you in, that’s often the fastest route. When they’re closed or can’t come out, we can help, and we’ll still ask for proof that you live in the unit. Landlords and property managers who need to secure a unit between residents can see our page on rekeying after a tenant moves out.
What affects time and cost
We don’t quote flat prices online because every lockout is different. These things change the time and price:
- Time of day. Late-night, weekend and holiday calls usually cost more than daytime calls.
- Distance and traffic. Where you are in the Charlotte area affects how long it takes us to get there.
- Lock type. A standard knob lock usually opens faster than a high-security deadbolt or a smart lock.
- Number of locks. A locked knob plus a locked deadbolt means two locks to open.
- Extra work. Rekeying, cylinder replacement or lock repair adds time and parts.
When you call, we’ll ask the questions we need to give you a quote. For more detail, see our page on locksmith pricing in Charlotte.
If your keys were lost: rekey before you leave
Getting back inside solves tonight’s problem. It doesn’t solve the missing keys. If your keys were lost, stolen, or left somewhere you can’t track, anyone who finds them may have access to your home, especially if your address was on them.
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so old keys stop working. You keep the same hardware and get new keys. It’s usually quicker and uses fewer parts than replacing the whole lock. We can rekey every exterior door to one new key while we’re there. Learn more about our rekey service.
When this isn’t the right service
This page covers homes and apartments only. If your situation is different, these pages are a better fit:
- Locked out of your car or trunk: see car lockout service.
- Locked out of an office, store or other business: see office lockout help.
- Locked out of a safe: we handle safe openings too. Call and tell us the safe’s make and lock type.
- The lock works but feels rough, sticks or won’t latch: schedule a daytime lock repair instead of an emergency call.
